Outgoing Route:
This is the Cabot Trail, through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Enter the trail at the 'Red BArn', the South entrance. It is paved road the whole way, with normal traffic, lots of tourists after July 1st, so do it before then. Starts off relatively flat, maybe small rolling hills. Through the beautiful Margaree valley to Cheticamp on the Northumberland straight. After Cheticamp the mountains start, French up, Mackenzie Down, North Up and Down. North has a grade of 11-12% so take low gears unless you are Armstrong.
Turnaround point/Midpoint: Big Intervale
Returning Route:
Bottom of North is halfway. The road follows the Atlantic Coast, usually with a headwind, through Ingonish and over Mt SMokey, back to the highway at StAnnes. You have now done 275km. If you left your car at the start, you have to ride another 30km of quiet highway to complete the loop and get to it. Now the chellenge starts. Drive back to Halifax, (3.5hrs) and have 2 large Peculiars at the Granite Brewery on Barrington St. Sorry but that is part of the rules. Only then can you say you roade the Cabot Trail in a day. Records for solo are around 8:50 i think. My best is 10:08, but then im 52.
