The 1988 Giro d’Italia is one of the toughest and most prestigious events in the world. Hampsten is most known for his victory in this race. He was the first American to win this event, and he did so in stunning fashion by conquering the Alpine and Dolomite mountain stages. This triumph cemented Hampsten’s status as one of the world’s best climbers.
