Rudi Altig was a German competitive road cyclist who was born in Mannheim on March 18, 1937. In 1960, he began his cycling career and rapidly achieved recognition for his sprinting skills. In 1960, Altig won his first big competition, the German National Road Race.
In 1962, Altig was the first German to win the World Road Racing Championship. In 1964 and 1965, he also won the Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix races. Altig was well-known for his versatility and was a formidable contender in sprint and endurance races.
Altig was a skilled amateur boxer and served in the German army outside of cycling. He was also noted for his outspokenness and fearlessness in expressing his ideas.
Altig became a television pundit and cycling team manager after quitting from cycling in 1971. He passed away in Remagen, Germany on June 11, 2016.
