Flavio Giupponi

Flavio Giupponi, an Italian road bicycle racer, was born in Bergamo on May 9, 1964. In 1985, he began his career as an amateur and rapidly achieved success, winning the Giro delle Regioni, Giro della Valle d’Aosta, and Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda. In the latter part of that year, he joined the Del Tongo-Colnago team and remained a professional cyclist until 1994.

Giupponi’s most noteworthy achievements as a professional cyclist were winning the 1990 Giro dell’Appennino and placing second in the 1989 Giro d’Italia, behind Laurent Fignon. He won the race’s fourteenth stage. He also won a stage of the Katalonien-Rundfahrt in 1988 and the Cronostaffetta team time trial that same year. He finished second in the Milan-Turin race in 1987. In 1994, he again participated in the Tour de Suisse, where he placed seventh overall and won the mountain classification.

Giupponi never won a major Grand Tour despite his accomplishments, however he did finish second in the 1989 Giro d’Italia. Moreover, he never competed in the Tour de France, and his sole participation in the Vuelta a España resulted in a DNF.
