Gianbattista Baronchelli was born on September 6, 1953.
In the 1970’s, Baronchelli appeared to be the next great Italian champion.
Baronchelli was second to Eddy Merckx of Belgium in the 1974 Giro d’Italia by just 12 seconds.
Baronchelli was also second to Johan De Muynck of Belgium in the 1978 Giro d'Italia by just 59 seconds.
In addition, Baronchelli was third in the 1977 Giro d'Italia behind Michel Pollentier of Belgium and Francesco Moser of Italy.
Baronchelli was the best of the rest (2nd place) in the 1980 World Championship Road Race where Bernard Hinault devoured everyone from the start in a race where only a handful of riders finished.
Baronchelli did win the Tour of Lombardy Classic twice, in 1977 and 1986.
