Gaetano Belloni was an Italian competitive road cyclist who was born in Pavia on November 18, 1882. In 1904, he began his bicycle career and rapidly achieved notoriety for his endurance and climbing prowess.

Belloni was drafted into the Italian army in 1915 and served in World War I. He returned to cycling after the war and went on to win the 1920 Giro d’Italia, a race he almost didn’t enter because of an injury. Belloni was able to win the race despite his injuries, becoming the second Italian to accomplish so.

Moreover, Belloni won the Giro di Lombardia in 1917 and 1918 and placed second in the Giro d’Italia in 1919. He was renowned for his climbing skills and his competitiveness, frequently engaging in duels with opponents during races.
